The Giving Season at Scripps Starts November 30 on Giving Tuesday

The holidays are a peak time for charitable support at Scripps College, when many alums, parents, and friends choose to give back to our students. To celebrate our shared culture of philanthropy, the College invites the Scripps community to participate in The Giving Season, kicking off on Giving Tuesday, November 30, and continuing until December 31, 2021.

A call for participation

Originating in 2012 as a counter-effort to the consumerism of Black Friday, Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement celebrated the Tuesday following Thanksgiving Day. At its core, the event encourages people to do good in whatever way they can. With the goal of reaching at least 300 donors over the course of the campaign, The Giving Season at Scripps similarly emphasizes participation over the amount given.

“Scripps is small but mighty. Parents are deeply engaged with our students and faculty; alums feel a strong sense of ownership of and pride in the Scripps experience. That’s only gotten stronger throughout the pandemic,” says Director of The Scripps Fund Perry Radford. “Our hope is that everyone who is able will join in The Giving Season, whether that’s through making a gift, helping us spread the word online, or launching a fundraising challenge of their own.”

The Giving Season campaign will be hosted on the College’s new givecampus site. Here, members of the Scripps community can make a gift, grab fun graphics to share on social, create fundraising matches and challenges, and track the impact of their collective contributions in real time.

Supporting inclusive leadership through gifts to The Scripps Fund

For those interested in making a gift, the College is encouraging support of The Scripps Fund. Gifts to The Scripps Fund touch every student on campus by fueling essential programming and resources and help the College meet its greatest needs and opportunities for growth.

Unrestricted, these gifts immediately fill in funding gaps for Scripps’ signature programs and expand critical support for scholarships, internship grants, athletics, and more. If you want to impact the greatest number of students in the broadest possible way, Radford says, supporting The Scripps Fund is your best route.

“Restricted gifts are fantastic and are necessary. But unrestricted gifts allow us to swiftly meet student needs and interests wherever they arise,” she says.

Ultimately, the purpose of The Giving Season is to give the Scripps community an opportunity to invest in and amplify the voices of the next generation of leaders the world needs.

“When you support higher education for women and those with marginalized identities, you invest in a more diverse and vibrant future,” says Eliza Kornfeld ’23. “Scripps is ahead of the game and looking toward a more inclusive world, and by giving, you guarantee that more passionate and diverse students step into the workforce with confidence.”
