Student Support Steps Into the Limelight for Giving Tuesday on Dec 1

By Emily Glory Peters

2020: a year punctuated by a pandemic, protests, economic depression, and a landmark election. Yet, amid the turbulence, Scripps students continue to press on with their education with trademark courage, confidence, and hope. In recognition of their fortitude, student support has become the heart of Scripps’ upcoming Giving Tuesday campaign on December 1, 2020.

Celebrated the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday is a one-day, global generosity movement rooted in support for meaningful causes as an antidote to the commercial crush of Black Friday. The College is encouraging the Scripps community to give to areas that directly touch students’ lives, including scholarships, racial justice and equity, internships, academic programs, and mental health and wellness.

“Millions of people from around the world unify on Giving Tuesday to make a positive impact on their communities through their philanthropy,” says Director of The Scripps Fund Perry Radford. “December 1 presents an opportunity for Scripps’ dedicated alums, families, and friends to likewise come together and support the critical areas of the College that our students rely on.”

The Giving Tuesday campaign also marks a rare moment of joint fundraising among The Claremont Colleges. Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, and Pomona Colleges will all participate on December 1 to raise support—and to celebrate—our respective and shared student communities. The colleges will use the hashtag #5CGivingTuesday to help donors and other supporters spread the word.

Rather than a contribution goal, Radford notes, it’s this same spirit of collective participation that lends Giving Tuesday its power. She hopes the extended Scripps community—including parents, staff, friends, and alums—will contribute to whatever extent they can.

“Going to Scripps changed my life. As a transfer student, Scripps provided the support I needed to thrive. All of this was made possible through the incredible generosity of donors and alums who believed in Scripps students and funded the scholarships, internships, and other opportunities that facilitated pivotal moments of growth,” says Madeline Sy ’18. “Giving back is one way I can pay this gift forward and invest in the future leaders and scholars beginning their journeys at Scripps today.”

To join the Giving Tuesday movement, mark your calendars for December 1 and use the #5CGivingTuesday hashtag on social media to share your reason for supporting Scripps and the 5C community. To make an early gift, please click here.
