Scripps College Receives $8 Million Gift from Anonymous Donor’s Estate

By Emily Glory Peters

Due to the extraordinary generosity of an anonymous alumna, Scripps College has received $8 million in endowed funds from the donor’s estate. Although the donor wished to remain private, she believed in Scripps’ mission and the continued value of women’s education in the twenty-first century.

The gift is unrestricted, which will allow the College to meet the areas of greatest need and enjoy flexibility in responding to new opportunities as well as emergencies. In supporting Scripps’ endowment, the gift will also contribute to the College’s long-term financial health.

“The strength of our endowment has allowed Scripps to successfully pilot historic economic downturns, including most recently during the pandemic. With the help of unrestricted gifts like these, we’ve been able to circumvent layoffs, avoid tuition spikes, and ensure our students receive the best possible educational experience even amid the many disruptions of the last year,” says Associate Vice President for Philanthropy Enrique Gonzalez-Salgado. “We are humbled by the generosity of this alumna, and look forward to putting her gift to excellent use on behalf of our students.”
