We have created several opportunities for students to engage and find community prior to start of the academic year. These programs are optional and do not replace participation in our virtual and in-person orientation programs.
First Generation @ Scripps
On behalf of the first-generation community at Scripps, we would like to invite you to attend the First-Generation @ Scripps Program pre-orientation designed to support the transition to college for students who are the first in their families to attend a four-year institution. The pre-orientation provides a range of sessions and workshops to position you to get the most out of your college experience including:
- Navigating academics
- Knowing your resources
- Communicating with faculty
- Working as a student and how to find a job
- Understanding your financial aid resources
- Getting involved at Scripps and The Claremont Colleges
- Meeting student leaders
- In-depth tour of Scripps College and campus resources
Most importantly, while the program is completely voluntary, it is a valuable opportunity to connect with other students and future mentors!
Pre-orientation will take place August 18, 2024-August 20, 2024. Scripps will provide all participants with an approved early arrival housing and all meals during the program at no cost.

International Students at Scripps
International students are an integral part of academic and cultural life at The Claremont Colleges. We value the diverse perspectives that the international community brings to the college community toward the advancement, depth, and breadth of our global society. The International Advisor, Primary Contact Dean, and Student Affairs staff are among the many resources available to support international students at Scripps College. Please feel comfortable coming to us with any question large or small; we are here to support you so that you can thrive personally and academically. While enrolled, Scripps Communities of Resources and Empowerment (SCORE) is a place on campus that we hope you will feel comfortable calling “home,” hanging out and engaging your peers in meaningful dialogue.

Summer Science Immersion Program (SScIP)
Greetings from the Keck Science Department of Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and
Scripps Colleges (www.kecksci.claremont.edu). I am excited to say that the department will again be hosting a week-long Summer Science Immersion Program (SScIP) this August. The program will run from Sunday afternoon/evening, August 11th, 2024, through Saturday morning, August 17, 2024, and is intended for incoming students who are:
• First-generation college students
• From groups traditionally underrepresented in science, and/or
• From under-resourced high schools
We are hoping and planning for SScIP to be in-person but, given the uncertainty of the COVID situation, if you are purchasing a plane ticket, we do advise that you purchase a ticket that is refundable or can be changed with minimal fees. If we are unable to offer an in-person program, we will instead offer an abbreviated Zoom version (as we did in 2020).
SScIP has been designed to introduce participants to the expectations and demands of college-level science coursework. The theme of the program, “The Chemistry of Life,” will be of particular relevance to students who plan on enrolling in introductory biology and/or chemistry during their first semester. First-year students from all three Keck Science colleges are invited to participate in the program.
Cutting-edge science will be the focus, as will building habits critical to academic success in the sciences. Departmental faculty will serve as instructors for the program and returning students will serve as peer mentors. The days will be full, (COVID-permitting) with hands-on laboratory experiments, as well as field trips. We will begin with two chemistry experiments on Monday—by the end of the day, the chemistry lab will feel like a second home! A number of topics will then be explored, including the structure and function of biomolecules. We will discuss the search for life on exoplanets and will visit the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles. We will devote a full day to issues faced by underrepresented groups in science, during which we will meet with an expert on race and gender in science and science fiction.
Students will have the opportunity to:
• Create peer networks,
• Establish strong relationships with science faculty,
• Learn about course offerings in science and math, and
• Explore the resources available across the Claremont Colleges.
For all participants, there will be no charge for room and board. Participants will be housed on campus and meals will be provided. Students will move in on Sunday, August 11th, and that evening the department will host a welcome dinner for all participating students and their families (again COVID-permitting). The science will begin on Monday morning! SScIP will conclude on Saturday morning, August 17th. We will provide housing and meals after the program if you choose to stay on campus and aren’t involved in Pitzer or CMC orientation trips.

Applications can be submitted at any time, but must be submitted by July, 7th, 2024. Admissions will be on a rolling basis and the program is capped at 30 students, so please apply early. You will be notified regarding your admission to the program within 1-2 weeks of submitting your application.
