Chemistry 029 Placement

New Student Programs and Orientation (NSPO) is designed to introduce you to the various elements of your Scripps experience, starting with Academics, one of our guiding principles. This section will include information you will need as you prepare to join our community of scholars.
To view the “New Student Academic Info & Class Registration” you can download it here.
The student of chemistry examines, describes, and explores the composition, structure, and properties of substances and the changes they undergo. Students who participate in Chemistry classes learn a firm foundation in the principles of chemistry as well as sufficient experience to prepare the student for basic research, secondary school teaching, the pursuit of a career in medicine, or graduate study in the field.
CHEM 029, Accelerated General Chemistry, provides an alternative to the mainline version of general chemistry, Basic Principles of Chemistry (CHEM 014 and CHEM 015).
CHEM 029 is taught ONLY in the spring semester and requires the CHEM 029 placement diagnostic and permission of the instructor to enroll.
While there are no additional formal requirements, students who place into CHEM 029 generally have two (2) years of high school chemistry preparation.
The CHEM 029 placement diagnostic will be available starting on July 1, and will continue to be available until the class is filled, but students should complete it by July 15 for first consideration. Students will need to register for the placement exam by emailing Professor Nancy Williams (nwilliams@natsci.claremont.edu). Professor Williams will provide further instructions for taking the online placement diagnostic. Following completion of the placement diagnostic, Professor Williams will email each student on or shortly after July 15 (if the diagnostic was taken before July 15) or within 72 hours (if the diagnostic was taken on or after July 15) to schedule a consultation with the student (and their academic advisor if the student wishes). In that consultation, Professor Williams will discuss the student’s placement. If they place into either CHEM014 or CHEM029, Professor Williams will discuss the advantages of each option, and a deadline for the student to make a decision in order to reserve their spot in the course.
