PLEN

Scripps College is a member of the Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN). Students benefit from real world experience, lifelong connections, and professional development as well as reduced registration fees on all PLEN seminars.

PLEN is the only national organization with the sole focus of preparing college women for leadership in the public policy arena. PLEN seminars enhance class work and curriculum by giving students valuable access to women leaders in Washington, D.C. from the legislative, executive, and judicial branches; agencies; nonprofit organizations; and the private sector.

The Laspa Center sponsors select students to participate one or more of the conferences listed below. Sponsorship includes registration and lodging with additional funding for airfare and meals. (Note: PLEN seminars will remain virtual this fall.)

The Laspa Center is currently reviewing sponsorship opportunities for PLEN seminars this year. All information below is subject to change. Please check back for further information and details.

The legal sector offers unparalleled opportunity to affect policy. From nonprofits’ advocacy, to congressional staffs crafting legislation, to the chambers of the supreme court, women are on the front lines of the great legal battles of our time. At the three-day Law and Legal Advocacy seminar, students from across the U.S. considering a career in law will explore the connections between legal careers and the legislative process in Washington, DC, see first-hand how to use a career in law to make a difference in their communities and the country, and gain access to a network of women ready to help them launch a legal career.

While women’s participation in the STEM field has grown in recent years, men still far outnumber women. This gap is especially pronounced in the areas of physics, engineering, and computer science, where women earn only 20% of bachelor’s degrees. This seminar offers college women a valuable opportunity to hear firsthand from women in science, health, and technology who are shaping our nation’s STEM agenda. Students will connect with senior women in the public, nonprofit, and private sectors.
