PLEN

Scripps College is a member of the Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN). Students benefit from real world experience, lifelong connections, and professional development as well as discounts on all PLEN seminars.

PLEN is the only national organization with the sole focus of preparing college women for leadership in the public policy arena. This year, PLEN virtual seminars enhance class work and curriculum by giving students valuable access to women leaders in Washington, D.C. from the legislative, executive, and judicial branches; agencies; nonprofit organizations; and the private sector.

The Laspa Center sponsors a small cohort of students to participate in the select conferences listed below. Sponsorship includes airfare, registration, lodging, and most meals. (Note: PLEN seminars are currently offered in a virtual format only.)

November 12-14, 2020

PLEN brings together a diverse group of college women from around the country for a three-day, online educational seminar to discuss current issues in the field, build professional skills, and hear from women leaders on the front lines of policymaking. This program will give all students access to a powerful network of women of color who make and influence public policy every day, from lobbying to working on a committee to heading government relations for a business.

We invite all students to attend as we lift up and learn about the important influence women of color have on all levels of policy making.

January 11-15, 2021

This seminar offers college women a valuable opportunity to hear firsthand from women in science, health, and technology who are shaping our nation’s STEM agenda. Students will connect with senior women in the public, nonprofit, and private sectors.

While women’s participation in the STEM field has grown in recent years, men still far outnumber women. This gap is especially pronounced in the areas of physics, engineering, and computer science, where women earn only 20% of bachelor’s degrees.
