Beorum II: Fragmentary Evidence

– Out of Print –

The transition from medieval to Renaissance is a fasciating period in history, where letters written by hand are supplanted by those made of metal. At the center is Johann Gensflesh von Gutenberg, who copied contemporary German textura and the scribal practice of abbreviating words to produce His magnificent Bible and other printed works in the fteenth century. His inventions of the hand mould for casting movable type and the printing press were risky ventures, requiring ingenuity, determination and not least, capital. The eight producers of this book are also risk-takers. They assessed the various levels of risk one takes in creating a new book: Stories and images have to be developed, cohesiveness managed, and technical skills learned. They speculated and gambled and managed those risks, working as a group, transitioning from neophytes to real printers in the process. They printed an exact copy of a page from the Gutenberg Bible from metal type, transliterated the Latin and translated it into English and printed that as well. Factoids from their research into Gutenberg’s risky adventures were included along with their own risky stories. The book is printed on luscious Nideggen, while the Gutenberg page and translation are printed on Frankfurt Creme with rubbings on Chartham translucent paper. The Gutenberg page has hand-calligraphed lettering in red and blue. There are images cut from linoleum blocks, photo polymer plates and gold stamping. It is a hearty effort at trying to understand Gutenberg’s challenges in the fifteenth century. The book is bound in Gary Frost sewn-boards style using red bookcloth and Cave Paper covers and is accompanied by an acrylic slipcase. Size: 6 x 16. Edition size is 93 copies.
