Fabrications

– Out of Print –

This book was intended to be a mix of the traditional typesetting and the experimental. Students were asked to write about a fabric which had some meaning to them. The fabric was then attached to a birch plywood board with acrylic gel medium. The board was inked and letterpress printed on paper, and the written text was printed on top of that. On the facing page, the students had to do something to the fabric image to make it appear to be moving, and then they had to describe the sounds that the fabric was making. This gave them a chance to experiment with typesetting. The folded pages were glued together at the foredge to make a butterfly accordion binding. The end sheets were slipped into a sewn fabric cover, which was sewn inside out and then turned. Flexible boards were inserted to add strength to the binding sides. The cover cloth was used to print the title page background. The text on the left was set in 16/18 pt. Scripps College Old Style, with various typefaces on the right facing page. Each student had to create two double page spreads. The pages can be pulled out from the center of the binding to display all the stories. The paper is Somerset Satin. The edition is 45 copies. The size is 7.5 x 8.25″.
