Response to the Events of January 6
Yesterday, we witnessed an unprecedented attack on our democratic institutions, an assault on our constitutional process, and the stark discrepancy between law enforcement’s response to the insurrection and violence at the Capitol and their response to this summer’s peaceful protests against systemic racism and inequity. As scholars and citizens, we must uphold the conditions in which democracy thrives, including the robust inquiry that comes with being members of a liberal arts community.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) Stags and Athenas cross-country programs recently welcomed Marina Muncan as their new head coach. Muncan comes to Claremont with over 14 years of coaching experience, most recently as the coach for women’s distance runners at Rutgers University for the last five years. Muncan also competed for the Serbian national team in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and was a finalist at the 2012 European Championships.

Based on the recent announcements about LA County’s timeline and metrics for reevaluating guidance for higher education, the Scripps Board of Trustees and senior team have concluded that it will not be possible for students to return to campus in January. Consequently, spring semester will begin in a remote format. We continue to work toward the goal of allowing students to return to campus for the second half of the semester.

This week, President Lara Tiedens shared her plans to leave Scripps College effective April 15 to become the Executive Director of the Schwarzman Scholars program. The College has flourished during President Tiedens’ tenure, benefitting from her passion for higher education, commitment to gender equity, and expertise in institutional development.

With a heavy heart, I write to inform you that this coming semester will be my last at Scripps College. I will resign as president effective April 15, 2021, and will be moving to New York to become the Executive Director of Schwarzman Scholars, an international graduate fellowship program designed to prepare future global leaders to meet the geopolitical challenges of the 21st century.

Scripps College is ready for students to return to campus by January 25 when the spring semester commences, and we hope that state and county guidelines will allow institutions of higher education in Los Angeles County to resume on-campus instruction and residential programming by that date.

This month, Scripps launched a new Instagram account, @scripps.fellowships, to highlight and share information about students’ fellowships, research, and scholarship opportunities. In a series called “Research Bytes,” the account uses Instagram’s IGTV video platform to feature brief vlogs about students’ summer research projects and to provide information about the fellowships that made these projects possible.
