Statement on Anti-Asian Violence

Dear Scripps College Community Members,

The mass shooting that resulted in the murders of eight people in Georgia, six of them Asian women, has left many of us reeling at this latest example of the toll that racism, gender discrimination, and xenophobia exact on our communities. Unfortunately, this is only the most recent example in an increasing number of reports of anti-Asian sentiment and violence over the past year. It serves as a reminder of the importance of remaining vigilant in confronting and eradicating systemic racism and bias and nurturing a safe and welcoming environment for students, faculty, and staff at Scripps College.

I encourage those affected by these incidents to immediately seek support from the multitude of resources available for members of our community through Student Affairs or Human Resources. I also hope that all of us will extend support and empathy to classmates, colleagues, or friends who are understandably frightened, outraged, and hurt. Scripps College stands with our community members of Asian descent, and we will continue our commitment to raise awareness and foster an inclusive, equitable, antiracist environment at Scripps.

Sincerely,

Lara Tiedens
President
