Jennifer Wood: “From Tierra del Fuego to the Land of the Midnight Sun: Spanish Women Travelers, 1850-1920”
In her recent book, Spanish Women Travelers at Home and Abroad, 1850-1920: From Tierra del Fuego to the Land of the Midnight Sun (Bucknell University Press, 2013), Professor Wood explores the writings of eleven Spanish women as they visited many lands and witnessed major historical events. From among these remarkable travel writers, she discusses two for her Tuesday Noon Academy lecture — Emilia Serrano and Carmen de Burgos.

Scripps College Presents Annual “Senior Art Show,” Showcasing Original Art by Students
“Misc.,” the annual senior art show highlighting the final thesis projects of graduating studio art majors, will be on display from May 2 to May 17 at the Scripps College Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery. An opening reception is scheduled May 2 from 7 to 9 p.m. in Bixby Courtyard. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

Scripps College Humanities Institute Hosts Renowned Artists and Scholars to Celebrate Feminism “Entre Mujeres (Between Women)”
Award-winning author Helena MarÃa Viramontes, acclaimed Broadway and screen actress Alma MartÃnez; Grammy award-winning musician Martha González; and Scripps College Associate Professor of Music Cándida F. Jáquez, who is also director of the Scripps College Humanities Institute, will host the peña “Entre Mujeres (Between Women): Embodied Knowledges” on April 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Garrison Theater of the Scripps College Performing Arts Center. The event is free and open to the public.
