Allison Joseph ’20 Sets Stage for Change through Activist Theater

Using activist theater, the “Ideal Woman” workshop explored women’s traditional and cultural roles in their communities. By the end of the workshop, armed with newfound confidence and creative props they’d made from nature, her students performed a five-act play which tackled issues they faced in their day-to-day lives, from navigating difficult relationships with their fathers to not being allowed to play sports with their male classmates.

Laspa Center for Leadership Executive Director Vicki Klopsch spoke to the Chronicle of Higher Education about Scripps’ financial literacy sessions. The Linda Davis Taylor Financial Literacy Program, organized by Laspa, is facilitated by Scripps alumnae who discuss topics such as budgeting, salary negotiations, credit, and loans.

Laspa Center for Leadership: Annual Summit Addresses Women’s Leadership in the 21st Century

On Thursday, February 28, alumni, parents, students, and faculty from The Claremont Colleges gathered in Scripps College’s Hampton Room for the fourth annual Laspa Leadership Summit. Organized by the Laspa Center for Leadership, the summit was established to promote active dialogue about the nature of women’s leadership in the 21st century.

Spotlight on Students: Scripps Classmates Give ‘Vote of Confidence’ to Students Registering for Midterm Elections

Self-described “friends, classmates, and policy nerds” Maggie Thompson ’20 and Harper Mills ’20, both politics majors, were recently talking about the upcoming midterm elections. The conversation grew lively (as political conversations tend to do), and they both realized how critical it was to get as many Scripps students registered to vote as possible.

Making an Impact: New Program Connects First-Year Students with Community

This August, a week before nearly 900 students were scheduled to move in to the residence halls, more than 40 first-year students boarded buses on campus before dawn. They were headed to Los Angeles and the Inland Valley—bound to one of four nonprofit organizations—to participate in the inaugural launch of Scripps’ Impacting, Partnering, and Changing Together (IMPaCT) program.

A Lesson in Leadership: Students Get Training in Entrepreneurship, Business, and Community Building at Laspa Student Leadership Institute

This August, the Laspa Center for Leadership at Scripps College held its second annual Student Leadership Institute (SLI), a four-day program designed to help students who hold leadership positions on campus—members of student government, officers of campus clubs and organizations, peer mentors, residential advisors, and others—hone their management abilities and develop community and coalition building skills.

First-Year Students Build Community through IMPaCT, Mellon-Funded Pilot Program to Launch in August

In May 2017, Scripps was awarded a three-year New President’s Grant to support an initiative of the president’s choosing to further a project or area of importance to her. Scripps President Lara Tiedens has allocated the funds to a new pilot program for incoming students called IMPaCT (Impacting, Partnering, and Changing Together).
