Scripps Magazine Fall 2024: President’s Vision

  • President's Pen

When I joined Scripps’ faculty in 1992, I did not anticipate how closely tethered to its mission I would become—but my dedication to the wellbeing and success of our community has only strengthened over time. I am honored to extend my presidential tenure through 2028, a continuity that allows us to fulfill initiatives already in motion and celebrate Scripps’ centennial in 2026–27—a pivotal milestone in the life of the College and all those who are dedicated to advancing higher education for women.

As president, my focus over the next four years is to continue to move Scripps forward as we prioritize increasing college access, expanding our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice, and equipping our graduates to thrive as meaningful contributors to society in their personal lives, postgraduate studies, careers, and beyond.

One major step forward in these efforts is the Scripps Access Initiative, a transformational investment in scholarships to help more exceptional, under-resourced students attend Scripps. I am thrilled to announce that The Seaver Institute has provided a $1 million challenge gift to inspire contributions toward this initiative. This generous contribution, made by a family with deep roots at Scripps and The Claremont Colleges, is just one example of what our community can achieve when we unite in purpose.

This unity is a charge I take to heart and share with you. Scripps is a special place that attracts and connects remarkable people distinct in their beliefs, backgrounds, and worldviews, yet linked by an appetite for knowledge that is only rivaled by our compassion for one another. I hold fast to these relationships, which feel more vital than ever in times of uncertainty, and remain confident in our community’s ability to uplift one another and fulfill our boundless potential for good.

In this spirit, I invite you to visit scrippscollege.edu/centennial and provide your ideas and recommendations to honor this legacy. Together, we will ensure Scripps remains a place of confidence, courage, and hope for the next 100 years, inspiring this generation and those to come.

With gratitude and optimism for the future,

Incipit Vita Nova.
