Portland Art Museum Reopens with Alison Saar ’78 Artwork

The Portland Art Museum has unveiled a major $116 million expansion that adds 100,000 square feet of space and nearly 300 new acquisitions, including an instillation from Alison Saar ’78.

Galleries are now organized by theme rather than era or geography, spotlighting contemporary and Black-art programming with bold works by artists like Saar, Jeffrey Gibson, Julie Mehretu and Mickalene Thomas alongside rotating Rothko installations.

The project aims to “help realize a rebirth of this city and the region,” museum director Brian Ferriso told Axios.
