Class of 2016: 86th Annual Commencement: Celebrating Scripps’ Graduating Seniors

Scripps College’s 86th annual Commencement takes place on Saturday, May 14 at 5:00 p.m. on Elm Tree Lawn. Interim President Amy Marcus-Newhall will preside over the ceremony, and Madeleine K. Albright, 64th U.S. Secretary of State, will give the commencement address. This year, 206 seniors will cross the stage to receive their diplomas.

Class of 2016: Michelle Ozaki ’16: Dedicated to Finding a Cure for Cancer

Michelle Ozaki ’16 didn’t have to travel far from her hometown of Pasadena, California, to find what she was looking for in a college. She always knew she wanted to be a science major, but she also wanted a close community, small classes, and a beautiful campus. She chose Scripps because it had it all and more—including a collaborative and supportive classroom environment and state-of-the-art research facilities for the biology major.

Class of 2016: Daniela Canas Baena ’16 and Juliana Canas Baena ’16: Building First-Generation Community at Scripps

As the first in their family to attend college, Ontario, California, natives Juliana and Daniela Canas Baena immediately felt the strong support of their first-generation peers at Scripps. Before beginning their first year at the College, the twins participated in the First-Generation@Scripps program, which allowed them to connect with fellow first-years, staff, and professors who identify as first-gen or first-generation-student allies, and first-generation sophomores, juniors, and seniors who served as mentors throughout the year.
