In Designing Remote Courses, Faculty Prioritize Creativity and Care

When Scripps announced in early July that remote instruction would continue for the fall 2020 semester, faculty expected that there would be challenges in conducting classes through online platforms, but also opportunities to expand the idea of what a liberal arts education could look like. Now that the fall semester is underway, Scripps professors have risen to those challenges and opportunities, creating courses that are flexible, creative, and student-centered.

Scripps’ Pilot Summer Session Delivered Innovations in Learning, Course Material

During a typical class session this past summer, students in Assistant Professor of Religious Studies Luis Salés’s “Feminist Interpretations of the Bible” course could often be found sleuthing around Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms during class time. But they weren’t distracted; this was part of their assignment: they were looking for social media posts from high-profile people that used religious assumptions to support public policy decisions.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas water polo players Emily McElroy ’22, Isabel Dhillon ’23, Jessi Beyer ’23, Ayla Huhn ’22, and Jessica Salaz ’22 earned places on the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches 2020 Women’s All-Academic team. To be eligible for the team, scholar-athletes must attain a grade point average above 3.2.
