Dear Scripps Students,
As Interim President Marcus-Newhall has indicated, we are so pleased to be able to welcome students back in Fall 2021, and excited to be able to host some limited activities on campus this summer, including select academic research and summer camp groups. It will be wonderful to see you back on campus!
I write today with important updates regarding our fall return. Though this message is lengthy, it is packed with pertinent information. Please take the time to read the entire message.
Vaccinations
In alignment with the other colleges in the consortium, all Scripps students are required to be vaccinated. This includes the COVID vaccine and a flu shot, prior to your arrival on campus in the fall. As with other required immunizations, a record of your vaccines should be provided to Student Health Services (SHS). New and returning students can upload proof of the COVID vaccine and flu shot here.
Student Health Services hopes to have vaccinations for students unable to obtain the vaccine prior to arrival. However, we expect the amount of COVID vaccine available will be limited. Students receiving the COVID vaccine upon arrival may be required to quarantine, based on guidelines in existence at the time. If you have not received the flu vaccine prior to coming to campus, please note that it will be made available through SHS in the fall. Stay tuned for more information regarding fall flu clinics!
New students must have their physician complete a more comprehensive health form, located here. Once completed, please follow instructions for uploading or sending the form to SHS.
If you are a returning student and do not have a completed health form on file with SHS, you will be expected to provide the form prior to fall arrival. Further questions regarding immunizations and vaccines should be directed to Student Health Services. All forms should be submitted no later than August 1 to avoid move-in delays.
Testing
Fully COVID vaccinated students will not be required to participate in weekly testing but will be subject to periodic testing as part of the College’s safety protocol. Students who are not fully vaccinated at the time of arrival will be expected to participate in twice weekly testing until such time as they are fully vaccinated. Testing will be provided by the College.
Summer 2021 Housing
Scripps will have a limited number of single room spaces available for students to rent this summer. Housing locations are likely to include on-campus apartments and Scripps-owned housing. Some spaces may be made available at the Claremont Collegiate Apartments (CCA). Students assigned to Scripps housing will be charged a weekly rate of $146.00. The cost of CCA housing will be provided should spaces there be made available. Meals will not be provided, and all rented spaces will have kitchens.
Eligibility for summer housing is restricted to the following:
- current Scripps students (graduating seniors are not eligible for summer housing)
- employed by Scripps or one of the other Claremont Colleges to conduct essential academic research that cannot be performed virtually; or
- employed by Scripps or one of the other Claremont Colleges to perform essential work that cannot be performed virtually.
Summer housing applications should be submitted by using this form. After submission, the Office of Residential Life will contact the faculty/departmental sponsor for verification of essential in-person duties. The application is available now. Students will receive summer housing notifications beginning on May 20.
Summer housing will be available from June 6 through August 13. Proof of vaccination is not required for summer housing. Students who are not fully COVID vaccinated will be required to participate in College testing protocols.
Fall 2021 Housing
Eligibility: Any Scripps student who will be full-time in the fall and would like to live in Scripps operated housing is eligible to apply.
Availability: Residential living spaces will be limited to singles and doubles. Even so, we anticipate having enough spaces for interested students. In order to accommodate housing needs, the College has acquired an entire building at the Claremont Collegiate Apartments, which will accommodate up to 120 students.
Prioritization: For 2021-22 only, incoming first-year students and sophomores will receive priority for on-campus housing. As in past years, juniors and seniors will apply for campus housing and must submit a housing application. Selection times will be released, allowing seniors to select first, followed by juniors.
The Campus Life Questionnaire and Housing Application will be available on the housing portal beginning June 1 and should be submitted no later than June 27.
Roommates and Groups: Students may create roommate groups as part of room selection/placement. Groups require a minimum of two (2) students and may not exceed seven (7). Instructions on how to create roommate groups will be provided on June 29 and students will have until July 5 to submit their requests. Room configurations and floor plans will also be released on June 29, allowing students to view floor plans for available rooms.
Room Selection: Rising juniors and seniors participating in room selection will receive their selection times on July 6, with room selection taking place July 7-9. All students approved to live in Scripps-operated housing will receive their housing notification on July 13.
Living Off Campus: Rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors may request to live off-campus in non-Scripps-operated housing. Students should submit their requests via the housing portal. Applications are currently available and should be submitted by June16. Approvals will be sent on June 21.
Orientation
We will continue to offer programs and events to help the newest members of our community acclimate to campus. In addition, New Student Programs and Orientation 2021 will include a special orientation experience for rising sophomores.

Move-In
Student move-in will be staggered over the course of four (4) days as a safety precaution. Students are encouraged to pack only the essentials as on-campus storage will not be provided. Students may rent off-campus storage space.
Each student may have up to two (2) persons assist with move-in. The names of these individuals must be provided to Residential Life no later than August 1, along with proof of the COVID vaccination. Information regarding the verification process will be provided at a later date.

- August 25 – New students move in
- August 26 – Rising sophomores move-in
- August 27-28 – Rising juniors & seniors move-in
Early Arrivals
Early arrivals will be limited to the following groups and must be pre-approved by Residential Life:
- August 14-Any domestic and international students who are required to quarantine per county, state or CDC guidelines in existence at the time. Per current guidelines, any non-vaccinated student will be required to quarantine.
- Students in roles supporting orientation, admissions and fall opening will be permitted to arrive early, and dates will be decided by Res Life in consultation with department sponsors
- CMS athletes will be permitted to arrive early, and dates will be decided by Res Life in consultation with CMS coaches
International Students
We are very excited to welcome international students to campus and understand that this is a particularly uncertain time for students planning travel to the United States.
Currently, the United States is accepting vaccinations from outside the U.S. International students who do not have access to the vaccine in their home country will have access to the vaccine through Student Health Services. All non-vaccinated students will be expected to arrive by August 14th to quarantine, per current guidelines. International students who have been fully vaccinated prior to arrival should expect to move in with their class, unless pre-approved for early arrival.

Accommodations
Students interested in exploring the accommodation process should contact the Office of Academic Resources and Services (ARS)–click here to learn more. Students may begin the accommodations process now. June 11 will serve as the priority deadline for consideration in the room selection/placement process. Students who apply by the June 11 deadline will be placed based on the accommodations provided by ARS. Requests for accommodations received after June 11 will be accepted but cannot be guaranteed.
