The 78th Scripps College Ceramic Annual, the longest continuous exhibition of contemporary ceramics in the nation, will open January 21 at the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery and continue until April 2. The exhibition, Handle Carefully: The Power of Words and Clay, is curated by Kirk Delman, interim director of the Williamson Gallery, and features work by Robert Arneson, Judy Chartrand, Keiko Fukazawa, Catherine Lee, Beth Lo, Mette Maya Gregersen, Thomas Müller, Elyse Pignolet, Ōtagaki Rengetsu, and Nancy Selvin. The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalog designed by Jennifer Anderson and an essay by LA-based artist and writer Kay Whitney.

Since 1993, the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery has collected works of art and presented exhibitions designed to enhance the Scripps College arts and humanities curriculum. Art from the Scripps College permanent collection regularly appears in major exhibitions across the country and in venues such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The Williamson Gallery has received support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Getty Foundation, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation, and the Pasadena Art Alliance.

The Gallery will be open during the exhibition from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, with an opening reception on January 21 at 7 p.m. Admission is free. Additional information about the exhibition is available on the Gallery’s website.
