European Studies

At a Glance

I’m interested in this field of study. Can you tell me more about it?

This is a program for all things European history, culture, and politics. If you’re interested in international relations, you might also find that the European Union Center makes for an excellent supplement to a more multidisciplinary international relations approach.

What are some courses appropriate for first-year students interested in exploring this field of study?

Any introductory course related to Europe in history, politics, or literature is appropriate. During your first year, we recommend that you take HIST 009: European Union, an introduction to the long history of Europe and ideas about union going back to the Renaissance.

If I decide to major or minor in this field, are there certain courses that need to be taken in a specific sequence?

No, the requirements are not sequential.

Can students who major or minor in this field complete a second major or minor (as a double major or a major/minor combination)? If so, what are some common pairings?

Absolutely! European studies pairs well with an additional major in history, politics, or European languages such as Spanish, French, Italian, or German.

About European Studies at Scripps

The European Studies major is intended for the student who has a keen interest in European culture and society and who wants to undertake the interdisciplinary training necessary to master a discrete, meaningful segment of the European experience. The program provides strong preparation for students seeking careers in government, foreign service, law, or journalism, or for majors planning to continue graduate work in European studies, the humanities and arts, or related fields.
