Tutoring

Accommodations and Academic Resource Services (AARS) provides tutoring programs to all Scripps students. These tutoring programs are peer-led and include the following:

  • Individual peer tutoring: Scripps students can request an individual tutor for various STEM subject matters. Fellow Scripps students recommended by faculty serve as tutors providing weekly hour-long sessions to their peers. During these sessions, peer-tutors cover foundational subject matter, explore study tips and tools, and direct tutees to other campus resources if needed.
    • To request a tutor, fill out this form.
    • We hire tutors throughout the academic year for various STEM related subjects. If you are interested in becoming a tutor, fill out this form
    • If you have questions pertaining to requesting a tutor, becoming a tutor, or any other ways to get involved or access this resource, you may contact our tutoring staff by emailing [email protected] (for Math/Econ specific questions) and [email protected] (for science related subjects and any other general questions) .
  • Mathspot: Mathspot is an open group tutoring space, led by students, who provide guidance for various mathematic subjects. Mathspot drop-in hours take place Mondays and Wednesdays from 7-9pm, every semester in the Career Planning and Resources Office (CP&R- located at Seal Court).
  • Additional Academic Resources: There are additional tutoring and academic services outside of AARS that students can utilize year-around, including:
    • Nucleus Chemistry Tutoring: The tutoring hours for this resource changes by semester. The best way to remain updated is to visit the Nucleus office and inquire about updated hours or to email Desiree Ross at [email protected].
    • Writing Center : the Writing Center (located at Humanities 231) provides walk-in support, individual peer support, and various workshops throughout the semester. There are also resources to guide students through CORE and Senior Thesis. We encourage you to visit the Writing Center to learn more about accessing support as well as their webpage.
    • Modern Language Resource Center: a space for language students and faculty to study, practice conversation, and more. Students can drop in for tutoring, to watch a film from the Center’s film library, or use the space for quiet study. Academic Coaching

AARS provides 1:1 academic coaching open to all Scripps students. The purpose of Academic Coaching is to empower students to:

  • Be mindful of academic responsibilities and practice balanced time management and organization.
  • Explore strengths and areas of improvement to create sustainable goals.
  • Better understand habits and patterns.
  • Improve self-regulation of learning, behavior, and emotions.
  • Learn effective study strategies and build helpful tools and systems/routines

This resource is available to any Scripps student, whether you hope to stay proactive in your academic success or are seeking to improve your academic wellness.

Academic Coaching Structure: There is no minimum or maximum on how many sessions you can have with the academic coach- we highly suggest at least 3 consecutive meetings to get the most out of coaching:

  • Meeting 1: Getting to know you (organically and through guided questions)
  • Meeting 2: Reflection, setting SMART goals, and identifying effective tools/resources specific to your learning styles and personal needs
  • Meeting 3: Reflection on SMART goals/progress and working with academic coach to determine what ongoing resources are needed to determine academic wellness
  • Additional check ins are determined on a case-by-case basis and all following meetings will be structured based on the initial goals set by the student and coach

To schedule an initial academic coaching session, you may email Desiree Ross at [email protected]
