Why study abroad?

I had never been out of the country and was ready to explore a new place far away from home! I wanted to see and learn about different and unfamiliar things.

Why did you choose Scotland?

I first narrowed down my choices to programs where I could take science classes that would count toward my major. Out of those choices, I picked IFSA Scotland because I would be able to take classes directly at a Scottish university, while still having support from a study abroad program. I also looked into the city of Edinburgh, and it looked like a city I would love to live in and explore (and I did LOVE it!).

What courses did you enroll in while abroad?

  • Intro to Cognitive Science
  • Quantitative Skills for Biologists
  • Introductory Chinese Language

What was your living situation?

I lived in off campus university housing with 4 flat mates (all full time University of Edinburgh students!). I loved my living situation. My flat mates were wonderful, I had my own room with a nice shared common area and kitchen, and my housing was a quick 10 minute walk to campus.

What did you do for fun?

I explored the city of Edinburgh and other parts of Scotland, joined the university’s dance team, cooked dinners with my flat mates, and went to pubs and restaurants with friends.

Highlights of the program:

Through IFSA I was able to go on a trip to the Scottish Highlands! We visited a sheep dog farm, toured a whisky distillery, saw Loch Ness, and stayed in the town of Inverness. It was such a fun trip that allowed me to see a new part of Scotland.

The most challenging aspects of your experience:

Scripps has a wonderful tight knit community due to the small size of the school and the type of students at the college. Because the University of Edinburgh is such a large school, it was hard to find that same sense of community that I felt at Scripps.

Final comments or suggestions for future participants:

Scotland is WINDY. Don’t bother packing an umbrella, but make sure you have a super warm and waterproof jacket!
