On December 7, Scripps College Life Trustee Phil Swan passed away at the age of 88.
Phil’s tenure as a trustee began in 1970, and included membership on all standing committees of the Board. A successful investment counselor, Phil made valuable contributions to Scripps’ financial health and stability and the growth of its endowment. He was a generous friend and staunch supporter of the College who described his engagement with Scripps as, “the best thing I’ve been involved with, the best thing I’ve done.”
Phil married Scripps alumna Sally Preston Swan ’52 who passed away in 2011. Together they had three children, Karen, Sara, and Philip, and a number of grandchildren. Phil is survived by his wife, Katherine “Kay” Swan.
Phil attended South Pasadena High School, received his bachelor’s degree in history from Pomona College, and obtained his MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
