Biography

Charles W. Kamm is the conductor of the Claremont Concert Choir and the Claremont Treble Singers of the Joint Music Program. He also teaches music history, with a research focus in Scandinavian choral music. Professor Kamm taught previously at Vassar College and at the University of Massachusetts Boston. He has held a Fulbright Fellowship at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki Finland, been a fellow of The Conductor's Institute, and taught at Xiamen University in Xiamen, P.R. China. Professor Kamm's repertoire as a conductor includes major choral orchestral works such as Bach, "B Minor Mass" and "St. John Passion," Haydn, "Creation" and "Mass in Time of War," Mozart, "Requiem," Vaughan Williams, "Dona Nobis Pacem," Poulenc "Gloria," Stravinsky, "Mass," and Orff, "Catulli Carmina," as well as unaccompanied works and cycles from the 14th through 21st centuries. He has prepared choirs at Harvard University, at Yale University, for Finnish National Radio, and for the Classical Music Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria. A tenor, Mr. Kamm has performed oratorio and recitals throughout the United States and in Austria, England, Sweden and Finland. Engagements have included Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Pasadena Pops, the Evangelist in the Bach "St. John Passion" in Turku, Finland, the role of the Madwoman in Benjamin Britten's chamber opera "Curlew River" in New Haven, Connecticut; tenor soloist in the Mozart "Requiem" at the Classical Music Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria; performances of Monteverdi's 1610 "Vespers" with Drottningholms Barockensemble in Uppsala, Sweden; and live radio broadcasts for Finnish National Radio. He has sung and recorded with professional choral ensembles including the Finnish Radio Chamber Choir, the Choir of the Church of the Advent, and with conductors as diverse as Robert Shaw, Peter Schreier, Simon Carrington, and Stefan Parkman.
