Spotlight on Academics: Senior Art Exhibition: Rooms of Our Own

The Senior Art Exhibition is a cornerstone of the studio art major at Scripps College. Each year, the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery features artworks by graduating seniors that constitute their thesis projects. In addition to making the works on view, the seniors conceptualize the exhibition, install their pieces, draft artist statements and wall texts, and publicize the event.

Each May, as seniors edge closer to graduation, the Scripps community takes a day to celebrate their academic achievements. Capstone Day, a Scripps tradition since 2008, brings the 5C community together to learn about outstanding senior thesis projects. Nominated by faculty, senior presenters share original projects in a range of disciplines and media—the culmination of the thinking, writing, and research they’ve been working on towards their degree.

Beginning on Thursday, December 1, students from the Scripps and Pomona Dance Departments will take the stage at the Pendleton Dance Center for four performances of student-choreographed contemporary dance. The choreographers—Maile Blume ’17, Rae Fredericks ’17, Willa Hevly (PO ’17), Sharon Keenan ’17, Amy Oden (PO ’18), Madelyn Shaughnessy (PZ ’17), and Maia Welbel (PO ’17)—are dance majors and minors as well as students who are simply passionate about dance.

Spotlight on Academics: Community at Its Center: Scripps’ New Core I Theme

The Core Curriculum in Interdisciplinary Humanities, one of the hallmarks of the Scripps education, is a set of three courses that looks at the relationships between the historical production of knowledge and contemporary issues and debates. This year, Core I, the first of these courses and a common curricular experience for all Scripps students, has a new theme: “community.” Sixteen faculty members representing departments across the College worked together for many months to choose the new theme and craft a syllabus around it.
