Awards and Honors: Mellon Foundation Awards $800,000 to Scripps College Interdisciplinary Humanities Initiatives

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded $800,000 to Scripps College in Claremont, Calif., for support of the College’s Interdisciplinary Humanities Initiative. The three-part initiative provides funding for summer undergraduate research fellowships, professional development for faculty, and new clinic courses that will pair faculty and students with community organizations throughout greater Los Angeles to address complex community issues using a humanistic approach.

Awards and Honors: Nine Fulbrights Awarded to Scripps Students, Alumna in 2018

This spring, eight Scripps students and one alumna were awarded Fulbright Awards, prestigious grants that fund teaching, research, and study abroad. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the highly competitive, merit-based scholarship aims to foster cross-cultural dialogue and understanding and create global citizens. The program accords approximately 8,000 grants annually in over 140 countries and includes roundtrip transportation to the host country, funding to cover room and board, and accident and sickness health benefits. Since the program was established in 1946, 59 Fulbright alumni have won Nobel Prizes and 82 have won Pulitzer Prizes.

Awards and Honors: Lina Mihret ’18 and Madeline Sy ’18 Awarded Thomas J. Watson Fellowships

Scripps seniors Lina Mihret ’18 and Madeline Sy ’18 have been named Thomas J. Watson Fellows for 2018. The Watson Fellowship is a one-year grant that funds independent research and exploration outside of the United States; it is awarded to graduating seniors nominated by one of 40 partner colleges. Mihret and Sy were chosen from a pool of 149 applicants, with only 40 students awarded grants.

Awards and Honors: Erin Matheson ’18 Awarded Davis Projects for Peace Fellowship to Pursue Diabetes Prevention in Chile

Erin Matheson ’18, a biochemistry major from Golden, Colorado, has always had an inclination toward the sciences and public benefit. “All my life, I’ve been inspired by people who have used scientific applications to improve the everyday lives of others,” she says. This summer, funded by a $10,000 grant through Davis Projects for Peace, Matheson will travel to Chile to establish a preventative diabetes program there. Her project, “Community Health: Comprehensive Approaches to Diabetes Prevention in Valparaíso, Chile,” will take a holistic approach to prevention, focusing on nutrition and exercise as well as pre-screenings and medical care.

Professor Gretchen Edwalds-Gilbert Awarded Fulbright to Conduct Genetics Research in Poland

As a first-time applicant and winner of this highly prestigious award, Associate Professor of Biology Gretchen Edwalds-Gilbert will serve as a visiting faculty member and researcher at the University of Warsaw Institute for Genetics and Biotechnology in Poland beginning next fall.

Awards and Honors: Michelle Decker Receives Graves Award in the Humanities

Scripps College Assistant Professor of English Michelle Decker has won the Arnold L. Graves and Lois S. Graves Award in the Humanities. The $10,000 award will help fund a research and teaching project titled Indian South African Poetics: Politics, Aesthetics, and Form.

Class of 2018 Awards and Honors: Scripps Nominates Three Watson Fellowship Finalists

Scripps College has nominated three members of the Class of 2018—Ilana Weisberg ’18, Madeline Sy ’18, and Lina Mehret ’18—as finalists for Thomas J. Watson Fellowships. This selection puts them in the running for the prestigious grant, awarded annually to 50 students out of hundreds of graduating seniors from colleges and universities across the United States. The grant supports one year of international travel, exploration, and independent study as outlined by each student’s proposed project. Scripps’ finalists are interested in topics related to animal care culture, opera, and political violence and national identity.

Awards and Honors: Professors Anne Harley and Nathalie Rachlin Win NEA ArtWorks Grant for Therigatha Premiere

Scripps College Associate Professor of Music Anne Harley and Professor of French Nathalie Rachlin received a grant of $10,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts that will go toward the commission of a new major work of vocal chamber music that highlights scriptural texts of ancient female Buddhist female esoteric practitioners. The premiere is planned for a performance at Scripps College in Claremont, Calif., on March 24, 2018, as the culmination of a weeklong festival across The Claremont Colleges highlighting the function of the arts in healing in post-genocide contemporary Cambodian society.

Awards and Honors: Associate Professor of Chemistry Anna Wenzel: Two Grants for Molecular Chemistry Research Put Students to Work at W.M. Keck Science Department

Having gone weeks without receiving an email from Rick Danheiser, MIT chemistry professor and editor-in-chief of the academic journal Organic Syntheses, Scripps Associate Professor of Chemistry Anna Wenzel thought she hadn’t won the grant she had applied for in early 2016. It wasn’t until Danheiser wrote to Wenzel he hadn’t heard from her that she realized she had won.
