Scripps Students Named Barry M. Goldwater Scholar and Honorable Mentions

Laura Loesch ’09, a neuroscience and humanities major, has been named a Barry M. Goldwater Scholar for 2008. Loesch was one of only 321 scholars chosen from among 1,035 nominees for the scholarship, widely considered the most prestigious award in the U.S. bestowed upon graduates studying in the sciences.

Scripps Junior Receives Davis Peace Award

Fatima Elkabti ’09 recently received the Davis Peace Award, given to students who seek to promote world peace through international projects. She will travel to the West Bank for several weeks in June to establish a series of writing workshops that she hopes will connect a group of American children with their Palestinian peers.

Changing the World One Loaf at a Time: College Student Devises Her Own Recipe for Global Service, Expands to Colleges Nationwide

Two years ago, Scripps College senior Elisabeth Winkelman used her now famous recipe for baking challah bread to raise money for victims of the humanitarian crisis in Darfur. Her program, Challah for Hunger, is expanding to campuses across the nation, including NYU, Smith College, University of Rochester, and University of Texas at Austin, with more to come, and has received recognition from Elie Wiesel and Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, the Chief Rabbi of England.

Catherine Powell ’06, a religious studies and Black studies double major at Scripps College, has been awarded a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship, which covers all expenses of graduate study abroad for one year.
