Sadie Otte Lauds Complex Molecule Synthesis in Chemistry World

The W.M. Keck Science Center at the Claremont Colleges.

Chemistry lecturer Sadie Otte lauded German chemists’ successful synthesis of the molecule canataxpropellane, one of the world’s most complex natural products, in Chemistry World. The molecule’s structure provides several challenges to the process of synthesis, according to Otte, who did not participate in the research: “A heptacyclic cage-like structure, twelve contiguous stereocentres, and six contiguous all-carbon quaternary centres—these are each significant challenges in and of themselves.”
