The European Union Center of California Fall 2001 Lecture Series: Jacobus Aarts

  • News Releases

In conjunction with the International Relations Colloquium series at Pomona College, the Scripps College European Union Center of California is pleased to co-sponsor a talk by Dr. Jacobus Aarts as part of its Fall 2001 Lecture Series. A Visiting EU Fellow at the University of Southern California and a member of the European Commission, Dr. Aarts will be speaking on “Busting the Trust: Comparing U.S. Anti-Trust and EU Competition Policies” on Tuesday, October 30 at noon at Oldenborg Center at Pomona College. This talk is free and open to the public.

Since 1963, Jac Aarts has been with the European Commission (EC), and, since 2000, he has been an advisor with DG Enterprise. His expertise in international aspects of enterprise policy has earned him positions as Head of the Steel Task Force (1982-1986) and Head of the Steel Division (1986-2000). Prior to entering the European Commission, Dr. Aarts worked as an economic analyst at the U.S. embassy in The Hague, and he has authored books and articles on competition policies, steel policy, and relations between the EC and the U.S. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from Tilburg University (the Netherlands) and is fluent in English, French, German and basic Italian.

The European Union Center of California, housed on the Scripps College campus, is proud to co-sponsor Jac Aart’s talk. One of ten such centers in the United States, the EU Center seeks to promote education, scholarly research, and public understanding of European integration and its consequences.
