The Scripps College Humanities Institute will host the conference “Terrorism or Liberation” on Thursday, November 14, and Friday, November 15, in the Hampton Room of the Malott Commons on the Scripps campus. This event is part of the Institute’s ongoing fall 2002 program, “War and Peace.” Conference sessions are free and open to the public. For more information on this program, please call (909) 621-8326.

This conference will bring together speakers from a range of disciplinary perspectives and expertise, who will address issues related to the theme “War and Peace,” such as problems of violence, conflict, revolution, reconciliation, and peace making in different geographic contexts.

Conference speakers, their topics, and scheduled times are as follows:

Thursday, November 14, at 7:30 p.m., Robert O’Neill, U.C. Berkeley student, will talk about his personal experience as a hostage during the siege at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem in April of this year.

Friday, November 15, at 10:45 a.m., Heather Zwicker, University of Alberta will speak on Terror, Realism and the Tenacious Stereotype; at 1:30 p.m., Ivan Strenski, University of California Riverside, will speak on Sacrifice and the Rhetoric of Violence; at 2:45 p.m., Allen Feldman, International Trauma Studies Program, New York University, will speak on Ground Zero Point On: On the Cinematics of History; and at 4:00 p.m., there will be a roundtable discussion with all of the conference participants.

In addition, there will be a screening of the film “Camp de Thiaroye” on Friday, November 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Humanities Auditorium on the Scripps campus. This 1987 Senegalese film directed by Ousmane Sembene and Thierno Faty Sow will be the final film in the series “When The War Was Over: Eight Films On Peace … And War” curated by Rick Berg and sponsored through the Humanities Institute. This screening is free and open to the public.

The Scripps College Humanities Institute was founded in 1986 and promotes interdisciplinary research and discussion in forums both inside and outside the Scripps College curriculum and biannually hosts a symposium.
