State of the European Union Addressed by Irish Politician Alan Dukes

Irish politician and legislator Alan Dukes, representing the current Irish Presidency of the European Union, will give the “State of the European Union” Address on Wednesday, March 3, at 4:15 p.m. in the Hampton Room of the Malott Commons on the Scripps College campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Alan Dukes is the Director General of the Institute of European Affairs in Dublin, Ireland. He led the Fine Gael Party (1987-1990) and has had a distinguished career as an active member of the Irish Parliament from 1981-2002, during which period he served, at various times, as Minister for Agriculture, Minister for Finance, Minister for Justice, Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications, and as Chair of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs. Dukes also served as Chief Economist to the Irish Farmers’ Association and, in 1973, headed its Brussels Office, working closely with the European Commission.

In addition to his current post as Director General of the Institute of European Affairs, Dukes serves as Public Affairs Consultant to Wilson Hartnell Public Relations, Vice President of the European Movement, and President of the Alliance Francaise de Dublin.

Dukes received a B.A. in politics, statistics, and economics and an M.A. in international trade, economic integration, and agricultural economics from University College, Dublin (UCD).

Dukes’ lecture is part of the Spring 2004 programming of the European Union Center of California. Part of the network of EU Centers nationwide, the EU Center of California is housed at Scripps College.
