Former Black Panther Leader Explodes Racism Myths

Former leader of the Black Panther Party, and current activist, author, and lecturer Elaine Brown will present “New Age Racism in America” on Thursday February 5, 8:00 p.m. in Balch Auditorium, located on the Scripps College campus. The lecture is part of the Alexa Fullerton Hampton Series, “Trailblazers,” at Scripps College. This lecture is free and open to the public. A pre-lecture reception, book signing and dinner at 6:00 p.m. are also available for $15.00 per person. Please call the Malott Commons Office at (909) 607-9372 for reservations and information.

Elaine Brown’s latest book, New Age Racism and the Condemnation of “Little B,” explores racism in contemporary American society and explodes the myth that racism is dead in post-1960s America. Her first book, A Taste of Power: A Black Woman’s Story, an autobiographical memoir of Brown’s years growing up in the ghettos of North Philadelphia and her leadership in the civil rights movement, is currently in pre-production at HBO. In addition, Brown lecturers across the country about her vision of an inclusive and egalitarian society, which focuses on resolving problems of race, gender oppression and class disparity in the United States.

Aside from writing and lecturing, Brown is president of the nonprofit educational corporation, Fields of Flowers, director of political affairs for the National Alliance for Radical Prison Reform, a board member of Mothers Advocating Juvenile Justice, and vice president of the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation.

Elaine Brown became, in 1974, the first and only woman to lead the Black Panther Party. Today, as an activist, she upholds the original vision of the Panthers and the survival programs they developed such as the free breakfast program for children, sickle cell anemia testing, and free health clinics, among others.

The Alexa Fullerton Hampton Series is made possible through the generous bequest of Alexa Fullerton Hampton, Scripps class of 1942. Founded in 2000, the Malott Commons now serves as the center of many on-campus functions for Scripps students and the greater Claremont community. The Malott Commons is located on the corner of 9th and Columbia, on the Scripps College campus.
