“Times of Change” – an exhibit of Japanese arts from the Meiji Period, 1868-1912 – will be on display from April 19 through May 17, 2004, at the Clark Humanities Museum on the Scripps College campus. An opening reception will take place on Thursday, April 22, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the Museum; both exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. Japan in the late 19th century was radically transformed by efforts to modernize and industrialize as quickly as possible. Japanese artists responded to those changes in various ways, looking to both Western art models and traditional Japanese arts. The “Times of Change” exhibit will illustrate themes of this Meiji Period, and will include prints, paintings, ceramics, cloisonné, and textiles from the Scripps College Permanent Collection of Japanese Art.
The Clark is a “teaching museum,” designed to offer students a rare opportunity to curate—research, select works, and mount—a professional exhibition. “Times of Change” is the culmination of an advanced seminar in art history under the direction of Dr. Bruce Coats, noted scholar in Asian art history and current professor at Scripps College.
