Ella Strong Denison Library Chronicles Work of Scripps College Press Instructors

The Ella Strong Denison Library at Scripps College is pleased to announce the exhibition "The Art of Teaching: Faculty Works at the Scripps College Press, 1941-2001" on display from January 28 through April 2. This exhibit will highlight the printed works of six instructors, including the late Ward Ritchie, prominent West Coast printer and publisher, and National Museum of Women in the Arts 2001 award winner Susan King. Ella Strong Denison Library is located on the Scripps College campus in Claremont and is open seven days a week. This event is free and open to the public.

Celebrating the sixtieth anniversary of the Scripps College Press, this exhibit honors those who taught students techniques of printing, book design, and book making while achieving distinguished careers in the field of typography. "The Art of Teaching" will feature mass market work, limited edition letterpress printing, and artists’ books by Professor Joseph Foster, Mary Treanor Schairer, Christine Bertelson, and current Director of the Scripps College Press Kitty Maryatt, in addition to those previously mentioned. All pieces in the collection are original and were published through instructor-operated private presses: Two Hands Press, Rara Avis Press, Laguna Verde Imprenta, and Paradise Press, among others. For more information on this exhibit and for library hours, please call (909) 607-3941.
