Distinguished Professor to Address Challenges of Global Justice

Thomas Nagel, distinguished political philosopher, will present “The Problem of Global Justice” on March 24, at 4:15 p.m. in the Hampton Room of Elizabeth Hubert Malott Commons on the Scripps College Campus. Currently a New York University professor of philosophy and the Fiorello LaGuardia professor of law, Thomas Nagel has specialized in political philosophy, ethics, epistemology, and philosophy of the mind. He has written a number of books, including Mortal Questions, The View from Nowhere, and The Myth of Ownership: Taxes and Justice. He is currently a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Fellow of the British Academy. He has previously held fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Science Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Nagel has held appointments at University of California Berkeley and Princeton University, as well as lectureships at Stanford University, John Hopkins University, and Oxford University. He received a B.A. from Cornell University, a B.A. in philosophy from Corpus Christy College, Oxford, and a Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Nagel’s presentation is sponsored by The Philip and Franciszka Merlan Memorial Lectureship in Philosophy and Comparative Literature. Each year, the Merlan Lectureship invites a noted scholar to speak at Scripps College.
