Capturing the Art of the College Press and Bookmaking

Two October exhibits at Scripps College capture the heart of the college press and bookmaking on college campuses. Through October 15, the Clark Humanities Museum at Scripps College hosts, “The Press at Colorado College: The Press as Classroom,” featuring books and broadsides produced at Colorado College under the guidance of art professor Jim Trissel with student assistance. Also on display at the Denison library through October 31 is the “Head, Hand, and Heart: Making Books on College Campuses,” exhibition, a celebration of the tradition of teaching students to combine design, text, and art in the book form.

“The Press at Colorado College: The Press as Classroom” exhibit features the beautiful art of Trissel and his apprentices created over a two decade period. The traveling exhibition was curated by Dr. Betty Bright, former director of the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. It originated at Colorado College and will also travel to libraries across the country. A color catalog featuring the books and broadsides shown at the exhibition is available at the Clark Humanities Museum for $15. For more information and exhibition hours, please call (909)607-36036.

The “Head, Hand, and Heart: Making Books on College Campuses” exhibition was designed with education in mind. The books and broadsides featured reflect the interdisciplinary nature of making books and embody the art that bridges the gap between technology and the humanities. All of the items possess a special quality encompassing the intersection of the intellect, the eye, the hand, and the passion for transforming an idea into reality that is found in its best expression on a college campus. A major component of the exhibition are the collaborative books from the Scripps College Press 2001-2004. For more information and the exhibition hours, please call (909) 607-3941.
