New Digital Book on Early U.S. Photographer Edward Curtis’ Photos of Native Americans

An extensive online archive of Edward S. Curtis’ work – amounting to more than 2,000 still images and 22 recordings of tribal songs – has recently launched as a free digital book for use in classrooms.

Laspa Center for Leadership at Scripps College Established With $5 Million Gift

President Lori Bettison-Varga today announced a $5 million gift to establish a women’s leadership center at Scripps College. The new center will be named in honor of Eileen Schock Laspa ’67, P’95 and Jude Laspa, Harvey Mudd College ’65, P’95 who made the keystone gift. The LASPA Center for Leadership at Scripps College, the women’s college of The Claremont Colleges, will embody programming focusing on 21st century leadership including Leadership, Analysis, Scholarship, Public Service and Action.

The Williamson Gallery Receives NEA Art Works Grant to Support Conservation of 16th-Century Dragon Tapestry

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chairman Rocco Landesman announced on April 25 that the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery of Scripps College is one of 788 not-for-profit national, regional, state, and local organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. The Williamson Gallery is recommended for a $10,000 grant to treat a Chinese textile altar panel of a dragon, which dates back to the late sixteenth century.

Nationally Recognized Expert Lectures on “Interethnic Conflict, Colonialism and Conflict Negotiations among American Indians” at Scripps College

Joseph Trimble, a psychology professor recognized for his research on indigenous populations, lectures on “Interethnic Conflict, Colonialism, and Conflict Negotiations among American Indians: Perspectives from Intergroup Conflict Resolution Theory” at 7:30 p.m. on March 27 in Garrison Theater, Scripps College Performing Arts Center. The open event is free to the public.
