Women’s Public Participation, Sexual Rights, and Social Change in Shi’i Lebanon

Lara Deeb, Scripps College assistant professor of anthropology, will speak as part of the Tuesday Noon Academy lecture series on March 3. The event will be held at noon at Scripps College ‘s Hampton Room of the Malott Commons and is free and open to the public.

Professor Deeb will lecture on the “Hizbullah community” in Beirut, Lebanon, drawing on ethnographic research conducted over the past 10 years to understand changes in gender norms. She will focus on both the significant increase in women ‘s participation in the public sphere and changing ideas about acceptable forms of heterosexual sexual relationships.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch or purchase one from the Malott Commons dining hall. Doors will open at 11:45 a.m.
