The Scripps College Humanities Institute presents a photography exhibition and lecture by freelance photographer and filmmaker Jenny Matthews. The exhibition and opening reception are part of the Institute’s fall 2005 program, “The New Documentary Impulse.”The exhibit Women and War includes works by the award-winning photographer documenting the devastating effects of wars and conflicts on women. It will be on display at the Scripps College Clark Humanities Museum from September 28 through October 23. The Museum is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. A reception and gallery talk with Jenny Matthews will be held October 20, at 4:15 p.m. in the museum. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the Humanities Institute at (909) 621-8326.

An unflinching twenty-year portrait-diary of women’s lives in war zones, Women and War features images from Matthews’ critically acclaimed book of the same name. Published in 2003, “Women and War” presents not only a powerful selection of images from major conflicts of the last two decades, but a running commentary by the photographer alongside each frame.

After working with the British Council in Brazil and teaching in London, Jenny Matthews became a photographer in 1982. She has worked extensively in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia for many major relief organizations such as Save the Children, Action Aid, and Oxfam. The exhibition of photographs Women and War has been exhibited by Oxfam and Womankind Worldwide and has appeared in magazine such as Mother Jones.
