Roya Hakakian’s Journey From the Land of No: A Childhood Caught in Revolutionary Iran

Roya Hakakian, writer, poet, journalist, and 2008 Guggenheim Fellow, will speak at Scripps College’s Garrison Theater on Tuesday, March 3, at 7:30 p.m. This presentation is part of the Alexa Fullerton Hampton Speaker Series, Voice and Vision, made possible through the generous bequest of Scripps alumna Alexa Fullerton Hampton ’42. The event is free and open to the pubic.

A fellow at Yale University’s Whitney Humanities Center and founding member of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center, Roya Hakakian lends her voice and passion to the topic of human rights, while striving to educate the world on issues in the Middle East. An Iranian-American, she has collaborated on dozens of projects for network television, including 60 Minutes, ABC Documentary Specials, Discovery and The Learning Channel. Her most recent work, Armed and Innocent, which was commissioned by UNICEF, looks at the involvement of underage children in wars throughout the world.

Her most recent book, Journey From the Lang of No: A Girlhood Caught in Revolutionary Iran, published in 2004, details her childhood growing up as a Jewish teenager in post-revolutionary Iran and was Publishers Weekly‘s Best Book of the Year, Elle Magazine‘s Best Nonfiction Book of 2004 and Best Memoir by the Connecticut Center for Books in 2005.
