Perla Batalla Concert: Levitt on the Lawn at Scripps

On Thursday, March 24, at 5:30 p.m. vocalist Perla Batalla will perform in an outdoor concert on Bowling Green Lawn, Scripps College. The event is presented by Pasadena’s Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts and is one of the campus events commemorating the life and work of Cesar Chavez. Additional support is provided by the Alexa Fullerton Hampton “The Power of Influence” series and by Scripps alumna Elizabeth Levitt Hirsch. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the Scripps College Malott Commons Office at (909) 607-9372 or go to Perla Batalla’s website.

In her career as a singer and songwriter, Perla Batalla has strived to pay homage to her cultural heritage as a Latina. Batalla is a Los Angeles native who infuses Latin rhythms with elements of blues and jazz. Before launching her solo career in 1993, Batalla performed with a diverse array of artists such as k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes, and Leonard Cohen. The Los Angeles Times said of a recent release “Batalla’s music caresses with its harmonies and gentle rhythms, then draws you in with an unexpected chorus or an unusual melodic resolution. But above all, she is a born storyteller with a rambunctious sense of humor.”

Leviit on the Lawn at Scripps will also present a concert featuring Lisa Haley and the Zydekats on Friday, April 15. These performances on the Scripps College campus serve as a prelude to the summer concerts at the Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Old Pasadena. In the spirit of the Levitt, the concerts are free and open to the public. As an alumna of Scripps College, Elizabeth Levitt Hirsch is producing these concerts as a means to give back to the Scripps community and increase awareness in the greater Los Angeles area of the summer concert series that she has brought to life in Pasadena.
