Levitt on the Lawn at Scripps Concert Series: Katia Moraes and Pure Samba

  • Campus Events
  • News Releases

Kátia Moraes and Pure Samba will perform on Friday, September 23, at 5:30 p.m. on Bowling Green Lawn, Scripps College. Bring a picnic or purchase dinner at the Malott Commons Dining Hall for this outdoor concert. This event is free and open to the public. It is part of the Levitt on the Lawn at Scripps Concert Series presented by Pasadena’s Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts and sponsored by Scripps alumna Elizabeth Levitt Hirsch ’74. For more information, please contact the Scripps College Malott Commons Office at (909) 607-9372.

Celebrate the beginning of fall with a performance by Brazilian singer-songwriter Kátia Moraes and her latest project Pure Samba. The five member ensemble will fill the Bowling Green Lawn with the sound of the most famous Brazilian beat—the samba.

Pure Samba features Kátia Moraes, vocals and percussion, Sandro Rebel, keys, Antoino Sant’Anna, bass, Leo Costa, drums, and Tony Shogren, percussion. Pure Samba, a reduced version of Moraes’ larger group Sambaguru, presents songs from Brazilian composers of the 20th century mixed with spoken-word interpretations of Brazil’s greatest poets.

Kátia Moraes began her career in Rio de Janeiro in the 1980s, performing with many of Brazil’s top musicians such as Sérgio Mendes, Airto Moreira, Rita Lee, Sandy and Junior, and Banda Cheiro de Amor. She has also contributed to recordings for the Grammy nominated artists The Latin Project and Latin Grammy nominees Alex Acuña’s and Justo Almario’s Tolú.

After moving to Los Angeles in 1990, Moraes has performed in many festivals and venues in California and across the U.S. including: House of Blues, Hollywood Bowl, John Anson Ford Amphitheater, Getty Center, Verizon Music Festival, and New Orleans French Quarter Festival.
