Humanities Institute Program: The New Documentary Impulse Welcomes John Biewen: “Documentary Radio: Stories Told in the Dark”

John Biewen, American RadioWorks correspondent and producer will present a lecture “Documentary Radio: Stories Told in the Dark”, on Thursday, November 3 at 4:15pm, in Boone Recital Hall, Scripps College. A professor with the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, John Biewen has produced a considerable body of documentary work for NPR and Public Radio International programs. He has produced a broad range of work on economic and social issues, as well as investigative reports and historical documentaries. Biewen’s documentaries have explored a wide range of topics including: onion harvesting with migrant farm workers in south Texas, following Navajo gangs in Arizona, and documenting the lives of ex-inmates in North Carolina.

His recent awards include two Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Awards, the Public Service Award from the Third Coast International Audio Festival, and the Scripps Howard Foundation’s National Journalism Award.
