Dr. Janet Helms to Give Girard Lecture at Scripps

Dr. Janet Helms, Augustus Long Professor of Psychology and founding director of the Institute for the Study and Promotion of Race and Culture at Boston College, will give the Marion Jane Girard Lecture at Scripps College on Thursday, April 21, at 4:15 p.m., in the Humanities Auditorium. The lecture is titled, ” How Racial Identity and Other Racial Constructs Explain the Test-Score Achievement Gap. ” A brief reception will follow in the Humanities Faculty Lounge. Dr. Helms serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Psychological Assessment and the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development. She has written more than fifty empirical and theoretical articles and four books on the topics of racial identity and cultural influences on assessment and counseling practice. Her books include A Race Is a Nice Thing to Have and Using Race and Culture in Counseling and Psychotherapy: Theory and Process (with Donelda Cook).

She has been recognized for her work with numerous awards including the Leona Tyler Award for a distinguished research career. In 1991, she received the Janet E. Helms Award for Mentoring and Scholarship in Professional Psychology, an award established in her honor by Columbia University’s Teachers College.

Joseph and Margaret Ann Girard established the Marion Jane Girard Memorial Lectureship in 1968 to enable Scripps College to sponsor distinguished speakers in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, and mental health.
