Iris Critchell, instructor in aeronautics emerita, Harvey Mudd College, will present a lecture, “Science Studies and My Career – From Fabric Airplanes to Flying into the 21st Century,” at the Women in Science Lecture on Monday, November 21 at 6:45 p.m. in the Hampton Room of the Malott Commons, Scripps College. The lecture is free and open to the public. Prior to Ms. Critchell’s lecture a reception and dinner will be held at 5:30 p.m. Dinner reservations are required. Considered an expert on aeronautical education and aviation training, Ms. Critchell developed an aviation curriculum, the Bates Aeronautics Program, at Harvey Mudd College (HMC). She is an inductee into the National Association of Flight Instructors’ Hall of Fame and has been flying for more than 60 years. A member of the 1936 U.S. Olympic swimming team, Ms. Critchell was also the first woman to complete the Civil Pilot Training program at the University of Southern California. She was a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots and was profiled in May 2005 in the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association’s magazine.
