Sandra Tsing Loh, the star of NPR’s, “The Loh Down on Science” and “The Loh Life,” comes to Scripps as a visiting professor of writing for a semester, beginning January 2007.

While on campus, Loh will be included in the Elizabeth Hubert Malott and Scripps College Humanities Institute spring speaker series. On Tuesday, February 13, at 12 p.m. Loh will give a lunch time lecture as part of the Tuesday Noon Academy speaker series. The lecture will be held in the in the Hampton Room of the Malott Commons, Scripps College. Guests may bring a lunch or purchase one in the Malott Commons Dining Hall. For more information about the Tuesday Noon Academy, please call (909) 607-9372. The second event, “A Conversation with Sandra Tsing Loh,” will be held in conjunction with the Scripps College Humanities Institute 20th Anniversary Celebration Thursday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Garrison Theater, Scripps College Performing Arts Center 241 E. 10th Street, Claremont. For more information about the Humanities Institute event, please call (909) 621-8326. Both events are free and open to the public.

As the inaugural Mary Routt Professor of Writing author, actor, and radio commentator Loh will teach advanced writing. The endowed chair, named in honor of the early trustee Mary Routt, enables the College to host a nationally recognized writer each spring for a visiting appointment with the Scripps Writing Program.

The Caltech grad has three different regular features on NPR and a one-woman holiday show, “Sugar Plum Fairy.” She is currently a contributing editor for The Atlantic Monthly and was a 2006 finalist for the National Magazine Award.

Loh’s books include A Year in Van Nuys, Aliens in America, Depth Takes a Holiday: Essays From Lesser Los Angeles, and a novel, If You Lived Here, You’d Be Home By Now, which was named by the Los Angeles Times as one of the 100 best fiction books of 1998. Her story, “My Father’s Chinese Wives,” received a 1997 Pushcart Prize and was featured in the 1999 Norton Anthology of Short Fiction.

Her other solo shows include “Mother on Fire” (which ran for seven months in Los Angeles at 24th St. Theatre), “I Worry,” “Aliens in America,” and “Bad Sex with Bud Kemp.”

As a regular radio commentator, Loh is heard on NPR’s “Morning Edition,” “This American Life,” and American Public Media’s “Marketplace.” Currently, KPCC (89.3 FM in Los Angeles) broadcasts her daily segment, “The Loh Down on Science,” as well as her weekly segment, “The Loh Life.”
