Professor Stacey Wood Cited in Inc. Piece on Scam Culture

Professor of Psychology Stacey Wood

A recent Inc. article on scamming has cited Molly Mason Jones Chair in Psychology and Professor of Psychology Stacey Wood. The piece referenced Wood’s research with scamming, saying “once you’re hooked, the scammers will often manufacture a crisis” in order to keep victims engaged.

Wood shares that if a victim has lost their entire budget to a scam, they may feel they have no other option to continue, given the scammers often manipulate victims through emotions like hope and fear. A known red flag that Wood mentions is if someone promises you a set fee, and suddenly cannot deliver without more funding, the provider is likely a scammer.  She recommends “slow thinking” to prevent being scammed, including talking to peers, considering pros and cons, and sleeping on it.
