LEO Weekly featured Julia Allisson Cost ’09 in celebration of her new children’s book, The Girl and the Boat. Depicting a young girl’s journey of friendship, love, and imagination, the book includes 30 of Cost’s oil paint illustrations. Louisiana-based ceramics studio Hadley Pottery will also release select designs inspired by the story.

Having graduated from Scripps with a double major in studio art and dance, Cost notes how dance influenced her creative process for The Girl and the Boat.

“The book is wordless, so like a dance, viewers read the story through the body language and expressions of the figures I painted,” she says. “It works as a children’s book, or as an art book for adults, and people of all ages have been discovering their own stories in it.”
