The Los Angeles Times spoke to Martha Gonzalez, associate professor of Chicanx/Latinx studies and 2022 MacArthur Fellowship recipient, and the band Quetzal, of which she is the lead singer, songwriter, and percussionist. The band is committed to telling “the social, cultural, political, and musical stories of people in struggle.”

“It’s not just about the march, it’s not just about the boycott and picket lines,” Gonzalez told the Times. Quetzal’s work is about engaging communities “through collective songwriting or through poetry, just getting people to dialogue through creative practices that make this social justice movement even stronger.”
