The Heartbeat of the College

  • Feature Stories

Scripps College celebrates National Student Employee Appreciation Week, recognizing the importance and impact of student employees.

The student employees of Scripps College are its heartbeat, without whom the efficiency and the success of The College would collapse.  This includes all those on work-study, interns, volunteers, tutors, paid and unpaid.  These roughly 600 students positively influence Scripps College in a variety of ways, whether it’s welcoming visitors to campus, assisting their fellow students in the library, providing support to faculty, or serving a perfectly made Nonfat Sugar-Free Vanilla Latte to brighten someone’s morning.

“The Office of Admission simply could not run without student employees and volunteers,” adds Laura Stratton, Director of Admission.  “Our student employees are integral in processing applications, greeting prospective students and families and answering questions from a student perspective.  We feel so lucky to have the amazing support of our student employees and volunteers – – they are the best!”

Tamsen Burke, Director of the Tiernan Field House, shares Laura’s enthusiasm. “The Tiernan Field House is “for the students – by the students!”  Their leadership and excitement are infectious with each student, faculty, and staff member they greet.”  She adds, “They share their joy, knowledge, and pride in promoting being healthy, happy, and a sense of belonging to their great space.”

Working on campus offers students an opportunity to gain transferable skills and build positive work habits, and therefore, better prepare for life after graduation.  In many cases, students use their wages to help pay for educational expenses which decreases their debt when they graduate.

Scripps College celebrates this week to acknowledge the value of student employment.  In recognition of their valuable contribution to The College, on campus students employees will receive a special treat during this week, as well as a letter of thanks from President Bettison-Varga.  Also part of this celebration will be recognition during Scripps Tea on April 13 and a pool party at the Tiernan Field House on Friday, April 15, 2011.

National Student Employee Appreciation Week at Scripps College has been organized in partnership Career Planning & Resources, Office of Financial Aid and Human Resources, with the support of the Tiernan Field House and the Mailroom.
