Scripps College Academy Profiled on Univision’s KMEX 34

Scripps College Academy (SCA) has caught the attention of regional and national media, including Univision, the nation’s largest Spanish-language TV network. Recently, SCA Scholar Xena Perez-Angeles and Academy director Roberto Escobar were invited to participate in an interview.

In this news clip, Perez-Angeles tells KMEX 34 reporter Gabriela Teissier how SCA has helped her. The 17-year-old explains that SCA has increased her self-confidence, and as a result, she knows she will go to college. Xena, who has applied to several universities and colleges, says she plans to go to college to major in either English or business.

In this interview that aired on the morning show “Primera Edicion,” Teissier explains that SCA is for young women, and that it’s not a “regular high school.” Escobar elaborates and explains that SCA scholars meet on weekends to participate in free college-preparatory workshops. Responding to a question about how students are admitted, Escobar explains that students must either be the first in their respective families to go to college or attend a Title 1 school or receive a free or reduced lunch at school.

They wrap up this interview by pointing out that SCA guides high school students toward identifying federal grants and scholarships that could help them pay for college. The reporter encourages families to learn more about SCA.

This roughly four-minute Spanish-language interview aired in five Southern California counties. Primera Edicion is Univision’s early-morning local newscast. KMEX has the highest-rated evening newscast in the Los Angeles news media market.
